Phlebotomy

Lecturers:

A phlebotomist is a healthcare professional who is trained to collect blood  and other specimens from patients for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, blood banks, and donation centers.

The duties of a Phlebotomist may include:

  1. Identifying patients, explaining procedures, selecting and preparing the appropriate equipment for blood collection.

  2. Collecting blood specimens by venipuncture (using a needle to puncture a vein) or fingerstick (poking the skin to obtain a small blood sample).

  3. Labeling and appropriately storing collected specimens for transport to the laboratory.

  4. Recording and maintaining accurate patient and specimen information.

  5. Ensuring compliance with safety and infection control policies and procedures.

  6. Calibrating and maintaining equipment and supplies

  7. Processing some degree of laboratory tests and office duties​

Qualifications:

Certified Phlebotomist (RPT)
